The nearest airport to Chamonix is Geneva International Airport which is ideally located only a short drive from Chamonix 1 hour 15 mins, straight along the Autoroute Blanche (A40) motorway or “White Route”, so nicknamed due to this stunning, snowy scenic route in the winter.

About Chamonix valley

Chamonix, or Cham as it’s referred to by the locals, received its full title, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, due to the fact this alpine town sits at the foot of the awe-inspiring Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps and in Europe at 4810 metres.

Chamonix is steeped in history with many of the streets named after those who first climbed Mont Blanc such as Jacques Balmat and Doctor Michel-Gabriel Paccard in 1776, and Marie Paradis the first female to reach the summit in 1808.

But Chamonix was first made famous to the masses for skiing when the town hosted the first winter Olympics in 1924 which raised Chamonix's profile as an international tourist destination.

Today, Chamonix is a bustling town - aside from the winter skiing and summer activities it offers countless restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and luxury Spas. Chamonix valleys monthly events calendar is packed through out the year with everything from the famous Kandahar Ski World Cup in the winter to the Marathon du Mont Blanc, Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc and music festivals such as Cosmo Jazz and Musillac in the summer.

You may be surprised at the size of the valley, home to approx. 10,000 permanent residents, attracting a further 30,000 visitors across the winter ski season, and twice that number who enjoy visiting Chamonix for the summer activities and events - making Chamonix the perfect destination any time of the year.

Visiting Chamonix in the winter

Chamonix is a unique ski resort as it is divided into five main villages each with its own ski area; Le Tour at the top of the valley down to Les Houches and including Les Grands Montets (Argentiere) and Brévent-Flégère (linking central Chamonix and the village of Les Praz).

Each ski area has something different to offer with the village of Les Houches being a popular choice for families. And of course, not forgetting the infamous off-piste ski run of the Vallée Blanche accessed via Europe highest cable car lift to the Aiguille du Midi reaching 3,842m.

Our drivers "Top Tips" for winter skiing

• There are 3 different ski passes but the Mont Blanc Unlimited (MBU) weekly ski pass covers the whole of the Chamonix valley including a day’s skiing in Courmayeur Italy just through the Mont Blanc tunnel 30 minutes from Chamonix, you just need to validate your ski pass at the ticket office in Italy on arrival.
• Also not so commonly known if you buy an MBU lift pass for two days or more you get one free "Winter Luge" run at the Parc de Loisirs adventure theme park, opposite the Monvenvers Train Station, and also access to Chamonix's local ice rink and indoor swimming pool!

Your Chamonix summer holiday

Chamonix in the summer is all about having fun outdoors - the mountain tracks are alive with hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers all taking in the breath-taking scenery of the mountain range surrounding them, cascading waterfalls and the Parapentes flying overhead. There’s plenty to entertain the whole family too with water rafting, rock climbing, kids’ clubs and adventure parks. For the keen golfers out there, Chamonix also boasts an 18-hole golf course designed by the world-famous Robert Trent Jones Senior with a stunning back drop of Mont Blanc.

For those of you wanting to see Mont Blanc up close we recommend you take Europe’s highest cable car the Aiguille du Midi to the viewing platforms reaching 3,842m, to see the glaciers and take in the panoramic views of the valley below and the peaks of the Mont Blanc massif.

If you want to go one step further and get up close to the glaciers, another must do – take the Montenvers cog train (from behind Chamonix train station) up to view La Mer de Glace glacier (Sea of Ice). From here you can go down to the glacier and also visit the Ice Grotto. There is a cafe, restaurant and Museum to visit too.
